Garrison HQ "Phantom Camp" Givealittle Project

Posted by Alex Smith on February 10, 2015 at 4:25 AM Comments comments (0)

In an effort to raise funds to help with the restoration of the Garrison HQ at Omaka, we have set up a "give a little" fundraising page.

Please feel free to share the link below with your friends, family & associates as the more we can get it out there, hopefully the sooner we can start some more serious work in restoring HQ to its former glory.

All funds raised go directly into the Garrisons bank account to be used for the HQ restoration project.

The Garrison Society Inc

Press Release

The Garrison Society, established in 2012 is Marlborough’s Largest Home Front & Military Historical Preservation Society. With members spanning the country from Auckland to Wanaka and as far afield as Australia, the region will soon become a focal point for a dedicated restoration team.

On behalf of the current sitting Committee of The Garrison Society Inc. it is my privilege to announce that we are now the Custodial Managers for the former Air Training Corps site at Omaka. This site will be restored too much of its former glory and become New Zealand’s only working WWII Military Camp. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make our dream become a reality. Some of our members have already commenced work and are well underway to have the Camp presentable for the upcoming Classic Fighters airshow in 2015.

Once up and running the Camp will house a museum wing, operational communications room, workshop, library, research facility, period offices, formal functions lounge and kitchen. The grounds will be home to military huts, replica shelters, guard house, memorial area, parade ground and landscaping. Military events and shows will be able to be held on the grounds and areas for pitching tents and parking vehicles will be made part of the camp layout.

As much as possible we endeavour to make a living history experience like no other in the country.

The Garrison “Phantom Camp” will become National Head Quarters for our steadily growing Society. Our largest Division, situated in Canterbury are experiencing rapid growth and a very steep learning curve, attending events such as Mcleans’ Island Vintage Car Club Swap Meet, Christchurch A&P Show and Rangiora A&P Shows amongst others.

“Phantom” can be described as a “Representation of Remnants of the Past” and that is exactly what we are. During WWII there were a number of Camps, Stations and Military Outposts around Marlborough and the rest of the country. We will do our utmost to show the public what could be seen on a Camp at that time.

Also our primary re-enactment capability is that of GHQ Liaison “Phantom” Regiment. Incorporating many different trades, corps and skills under the same Command.

We look forward to having you experience the past.

We are currently in talks with some very friendly people, who will hopefully make our dreams come true. We are looking at a sizable area of land, buildings and other major assets to call home, establish as a local museum and offer local support where possible. Apart from becoming The Garrison National Heqdquarters, we will also be looking at some pretty amazing attractions in the coming years. We are also looking to assist the local community by becoming a backup Civil Defence area in case the need arises. There will be a lot of work and input required but we are hoping the local community can work together and lend us the support and guidance we need to make this another great Marlborough attraction.

Legal at last. As of the 11th June 2013, The Garrison is now an Incorporated Society. Apart from being officially recognized, it will make getting grants so much more official.

Branching Out

It is official. As of the 25th April 2013 The Garrison now has a permanent Canterbury Contingent. Headquarters will remain in Blenheim, but we will now have "Marlborough Barracks" and "Canterbury Barracks".

Watch out for them at upcoming shows. Look for the Canterbury Barracks TAC Sign in red and black.

ANZAC Day 2013

Hi Folks.

As of today The Garrison has been allowed a small display in the foyer of The Clubs of Marlborough (RSA) to support ANZAC Day. Our "Brothers In Arms" display features the two WWII Motorcycles, Indian M741B and Triumph 3HW and will remain until Monday.

If you look closely the two bikes are totally different but have one matching feature (apart from being Olive Drab in colour). They are both sporting the Kea's Head TAC sign, which was the Official Symbol for 5th Division operating in New Zealand during WWII.

Lest We Forget.

Good news all round this week. We have managed to secure a number of new tents for The Garrison. These tents will become the homes for our newly appointed units, 11th Field Ambulance and RNZAF Fighter Wing HQ.

We would like to thank all those involved in the procurement, transport and logistics of this new purchase.
